Recent Migration from the Colombo Process Countries to the European Union

The paper was written as a background document for Asia-EU Dialogue on Labour Migration held in Brussels, Belgium on 8-9 February 2011 aimed at facilitating cooperation on migration issues between the EU and the eleven Colombo Process countries (CPC): Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and VietNam.

The Colombo Process is a Regional Consultative Process on the management of overseas employment and contractual labour for countries of origins in Asia. Secretariat functions are performed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The Independent Network of Labour Migration and Integration Experts (LINET), funded by the European Commission (EC), DG Employment, is an important tool in providing the EC with  policy oriented research on the impact of migration. The ulimate objective of LINET is to support the EC services, and in particular DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, in ensuring better mainstreaming of migration considerations in economic, employment and social policies and in the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy.
